MANGALORE:
As peace started returning to riot-hit Mangalore, political parties on Monday
hijacked the curfew-clamped coastal city by commencing the blamegame.
The communal violence that
claimed two lives and damaged property worth over Rs 1 crore for last five days
in the city and its suburbs, subsided by Monday night.
Even the four-hour curfew
relaxation on Monday morning was reportedly peaceful. But politicians ensured
that the heat was on.
While
JD(S) charged fundamentalists, including VHP, with triggering communal clashes,
BJP turned the needle of suspicion towards the Congress, which retorted by
lashing out at the JD(S)-BJP combine for failing to contain violence.
The Congress high command have
sent Union minister of state for home affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal to take stock
of the situation.
Indicating
that the continuation of violence for nearly a week needed a high-level probe by
the state, Jaiswal said if the state government recommends, the Centre was ready
to help it in conducting any type of inquiry, including one by the CBI.
After visiting the riot-hit
areas of Ullal, Derlakatte, Kuttarupadavu, B C Road in the district, Jaiswal
said: "I think it merits a CBI probe."
Asking the district
administration to take precautionary measures, Jaiswal said: "Accidents happen,
but letting that continue, like this incident is not good."
